A late Saturday afternoon session was quickly turning into an evening’s entertainment.
It wasn’t the alcohol or the darkness drawing me to that conclusion, but the massive drop in age. In the afternoon every pub seemed to be filled with thirtysomething shoppers and diners.
Now, with the night drawing in and the hemlines heading up, we were appearing to turn positively prehistoric.
The average age among our group was 31, hardly old. But on the street things were starting to look much younger. So we swung off Sauchiehall Street and into the safe confines of the CCA Terrace Bar.
The pub often serves as an alternative student union for undergraduates at the Glasgow School Of Art during the week, and a place for groups of foreign students to compare snaps of Mackintosh’s masterpiece over a pint of lager.
However, on Saturday night it was a much more interesting crowd. With a live DJ playing some Beastie Boys, a mix of mid-to-late twentysomethings were populating its wooden tabled, bare walled space.
It was all very stylish – so we decided to spoil it all by pulling up to the bar and taking the stools in front of the pumps.
We ordered a Guinness, a Suffolk Cider and a couple of pints of Budvar. Each were good pints. Very good pints.
The cocktails looked equally delicious. Starting at £5.25 for mixes such as Gimlets, to just over £6 for a champagne cocktail, the venue has the drinks side of things in place.
And so is the customer service. Saturday night and a few of the tables had reserved signs, which is a good feature to offer.
Then came the torture.
Just as we spotted a food menu we overheard the barman explain to a customer that the kitchen had closed. Which was a real disappointment as the bar seems to have a good kitchen in place.
Some of the dishes normally being served up include Chargrilled Aberdeen Angus Beef Burgers, Steak and Mushroom Puff Pastry Pies and Thai Vegetable Coconut Curries – all for less than £6 each.
A good DJ, an eclectic and eccentric mix of customers, it was a good place to while away a few hours.
But our stomachs were drawing us back to Sauchiehall Street … and to China Buffet King instead.
