You have to hand it to the Arches Theatre Company for making a huge positive out of a negative.
Thanks to development works in Central Station, the subterranean arts venue has decamped from its Argyle Street home until March 1.
But that’s offered up the chance for some fascinating off-site theatre.
The Arches has been getting creative with an exciting site-specific theatre programme featuring performances hosted in unlikely venues such as a garden shed in Kelvinbridge, a disused shop in Govan and a performer’s flat in Pollokshields.
Tomorrow night the venue is Govan Cross Shopping Centre and the happening, in conjunction with the National Theatre of Scotland, is Allotment. Billed as “a night where live performance, new art and music fuse unconventionally”, it brings together a diverse range of community groups.
As part of Life Long, at The Glasgow Art Club until Saturday, you can have a drink and a dance at the 52nd wedding anniversary celebration of Tillie and Ronnie Jeffrey, who met in Paisley Town Hall in the Fifties. The show charts their relationship over the years.
From February 25 to 27 Molly Taylor presents A La Carte, an interactive performance about dining held in the artist’s own flat in Pollokshields, which includes a specially cooked three-course vegetarian meal in the ticket price. BYOB, and expect plenty of stimulating conversation.
Various venues, various times.
Expect dancing in the aisles of the King’s this week as the theatre hosts a fast-moving, hit-packed tribute to the sounds of the Motown era. Dancing In The Streets features a jukebox of classics including I Heard It Through The Grapevine, My Girl, Dancing in the Streets, I’ll Be There, Stop In the Name of Love, Tears of a Clown and Tracks of My Tears.
A King’s Theatre spokesman said; “Motown broke down barriers around the world while producing some of the most influential and enduring songs of the 20th Century.
“With a full supporting company of singers, dancers and an amazing live band, Dancing in the Streets re-creates the energy, style and music of all your favourite Motown stars.”
The show has been wowing audiences in London’s West End for three years.
Until Saturday, King’s Theatre Glasgow.
