NIGHTMOVES - i AM @ SUB CLUB

Over in the US, the current explosion of house music (or Electronic Dance Music, as North Americans insist on calling it) has created a rave culture that never really existed there before.

Sure, underground house and techno clubs have long been a part of East Coast nightlife, but thanks to Skrillex, Deadmau5 and their ilk it's becoming a country-wide phenomenon.

This year at Coachella, America's (arguably) hipper Glastonbury equivalent, has Benny Benassi, Eric Prydz, Simian Mobile Disco and Hardwell on the bill alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blur, a move that a few years ago seemed as likely as One Direction appearing at T in the Park – although that is now surely just a matter of time.

One of the most surprising things about our American cousins' rave awakening is that we've always known how to do it.

The i AM team is a case in point.

Every Tuesday night they fill the Sub Club – up there with Berghain and Fabric among Europe's premier clubs – to the brim with hyper-energetic, discerning students who invariably end up having the night of their lives.

Last year their guests included The Artful Dodger, JD Twitch, Blawan and Barrientos among others – coming up in the next few weeks are Juan Atkins, Tornado Wallace and a return for local hero Jackmaster.

On Tuesday night we witnessed a normal resident's night – the previous week had featured Pro Vinylist Karim on guest duties – devolve into a sweaty, fist pumping, ceiling grabbing riot, the likes of which has no right to be happening on a Tuesday night.

Their motto is "forward thinking electronic music for the masses" – it's the final three words here that set i AM apart.
