THE battle for gaming supremacy was stepped up today when Sony announced its new PlayStation 4 would be £80 cheaper than the XBox One.

Microsoft had revealed yesterday that the XBox One, to be launched in November, would cost £429.

But in California today Andrew House, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, held up the Japanese firm's new product and the Welshman then announced: "For the folks in my homeland, £349."

Sony said 140 PS4 games were in development, 100 of which should be released within its first year.

Meanwhile, Apple is to launch a free music service that could threaten the likes of Spotify.

It announced the arrival of iTunes Radio just a month after Google introduced its Play Music All Access, a streaming subscription service for Android devices.

But in a departure from the internet giant's pay-to-use facility, iRadio will be available free, providing users are willing to listen to advertisements.

A second option - iTunes Match - will be launched for those prepared to pay a fee of £21.99 a year for a similar service, without ads.
