FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a blaze which broke out in the city's new £842million South Glasgow Hospital.

The fire started in a water tank room on the second floor of the building, which is expected to open in 2015 and replaces the existing Southern General Hospital.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at the Govan site shortly after 1pm today. There was no reports of any injuries.

A spokeswoman from Scottish Fire and Rescue said the fire was put out quickly but firefighters stayed on site to assess the damage and carry out inquiries.

She added: "It was a small fire in the water tank plant room on the second floor of the building.

"Firefighters using breathing apparatus and a hose rail jet to extinguish the fire.

"There will be an investigation to see how it started."

Work started on the construction project in 2010.

When it is complete it will be one of the largest acute hospitals in the UK, with 1109 beds.

It will include the new Children's Hospital where services will be transferred from Yorkhill Hospital.
