AROUND 170 students will graduate from the University of the West of Scotland's Paisley campus today.

In the first of two glittering ceremonies at the Coats Memorial Baptist Church in the town this week, proud families and friends will join in the celebrations.

Among today's high achievers is Stuart MacGowan, who graduates with a first-class honours BSc in chemistry. The 22-year-old, who lives in Cardonald, says he came into the course in a "round about kind of way".

Stuart said: "I left school at 16, with no Highers, and got a place on a Modern Apprenticeship programme with a chemical plant in Paisley. As part of the programme, I could go to what was then Paisley University, now the University of the West of Scotland, to study chemistry and chemical engineering, which was great.

"I started doing it part time, but after my first year, I realised it was going to take me about eight years to complete the degree - so I decided to study full time."

Stuart, who is hoping to start a PhD in Dublin after the summer, added: "It was hard at first but I enjoyed it, and I'm really pleased I'm coming out with a first class degree."

The university is also awarding an Honorary Doctorate, to world-renowned nuclear physicist Professor Witold Nazarewicz.

Professor Nazarewicz of the University of Tennessee is also scientific director of a major US experimental nuclear physics facility, the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

He was also recently appointed a visiting professor of the university. This post follows a three-month Carnegie Centenary Professorship which Professor Nazarewicz held at UWS last year which saw nuclear physics researchers from universities throughout the west of Scotland benefiting from his world- renowned expertise in this area.

Professor Seamus McDaid, principal and vice chancellor of University of the West of Scotland, said: "We are delighted to award Professor Nazarewicz, who is a scientist of the highest calibre, with an honorary doctorate.

"Professor Nazarewicz has made, and continues to make, a significant contribution to the development of nuclear science globally and has an international reputation for his many contributions in this area. He is viewed as one of the world's leading theoretical nuclear physicists."
