The 25-year-old was rushed to hospital after being trapped under a huge sheet of metal, but doctors couldn't save him.

Paramedics were called out to the Henderson Kerr scrapyard in Bellshill, yesterday morning after another worker raised the alarm.

The injured man, who has not yet been named, was taken to Monklands General Hospital in Airdrie but died of his injuries soon after being admitted.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: "At 10.50 yesterday morning a 25-year-old man sustained fatal injuries after being crushed at Henderson Kerr scrapyard in Kirklee Road, Bellshill.

"The matter has now been referred to the Health and Safety Executive."

Work appeared to be going on as normal today at the yard which is in the middle of a residential area in the Moss Park area of Bellshill.

A spokesman for Henderson Kerr refused to comment on the accident.

The company recycles scrap metal including used cars and machinery for use in industry.

Meanwhile, a second man was killed when a metal drum he was cutting to make a barbecue exploded like a bomb.

Welder Ian Morrison was slicing through the disused drum when the explosion happened on Saturday, blasting the container through the roof of the workshop.

Colleagues at Ross Agri, in St Cyrus, Kincardineshire rushed to help the 50-year-old but he died of his injuries at the scene.
