A teenager who fired an air rifle at a man trying to break into his home has been caged for 12 months.

Casimir Ali reacted after he heard David Goldie attempting to force his way into his flat in Glasgow's West End last June.

The computing student grabbed the weapon and a small fishing knife after Goldie - who was high on drugs - launched a bottle at his step dad.

First offender Ali earlier admitted at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Goldie while under provocation.

Sheriff John Baird that how he reacted would have been considered differently if Goldie had actually got inside his flat.

He said: "If that had been the situation and you behaved in this way, then it could have been a case which could have been disposed of in another way.

"You chose to arm yourself with a rifle and a knife and along with others confronted the person yourself.

"As he attempted to move away, you shot him twice. Your conduct is completely unacceptable. This was taking the law into your own hands. The only appropriate disposal is a custodial sentence."
