IT HAS been six years since Tom Odell shot to fame with his hit single Another Love and four since his voice entered the home of millions through a tear-jerking John Lewis Christmas advert.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter is now gearing up to release his third album, Jubilee Road. Written in Tom’s London home, the record was largely inspired by the community around him.

Although the title of the new album may be fictional in itself, Jubilee Road is described as Odell’s most honest and personal outing so far.

The album intertwines real-life stories of the time Tom spent living in a house in East London.

Choosing to fictionalise the street to preserve his erstwhile neighbours privacy, the listener is drawn into the affecting real-life dramas that Odell paints.

From the opener Jubilee Road’s scene-setting of the street’s colourful community and the whiskey-shaking gamblers in the local betting shop (Queen Of Diamonds), to the almost unbearably bittersweet celebration of Wedding Day.

In his childhood home, however, music wasn’t a prominent feature. Unlike other artists, there was no gathering round the piano and focus on finding an instrument. The lack of pressure is what made Tom fall in love with his future profession,

“My love of music is bizarre because it’s not really in my family”, he explains.

“With other artists you hear about the fact they come from big musical families.

“There was a bit of that but my immediate family doesn’t really play an instrument. That’s why I became so obsessed with it. I just adored it.

“I adored playing the piano right from the very start. I was playing other people’s songs and then the songwriting thing happened and I caught the bug.

“It was also because the songwriting thing was so appealing because my teacher was always telling me to learn classical musical and I found the rigour of learning classical music really boring.

“The world of writing was infinity more exciting to me than learning a piece by Bach - that just felt like more school, regimented.”

Success came at an early age for the floppy-haired pianist having won the 2013 Brits Critics’ Choice award at 22.

He then went be named Songwriter of the Year in 2014 after his debut album reached number one.

His singles Another Love and Real Love both hit the UK Top 10, with the latter, a cover of a track by The Beatles – used for the UK John Lewis’ Christmas TV 2014 ad campaign. Odell has amassed an impressive 1.8 million album sales and 10 million single sales worldwide.

For his third release, the London musician harnessed his new found confidence and time at home to record the album in one take. Tom took full control of his music, not only writing, singing, and vamping up his vibrant piano style on all 10 songs, but also self-producing them

He explains: “The biggest difference is the way I wrote it. I wrote it all in one take within a relatively short period of time. Just a few months – one batch of songs in one month and then about six months later I wrote another couple.

“I was sitting in the living room of this house and it was very different in that the second album I wrote all over the place. It felt quite centred this one, it was all about one very specific period of time and one very specific location.”

He adds: “Even the way I recorded it there wasn’t very many people involved. It was just the band so it was a bit of a closed shop. I didn’t really bring that more people in to it.

“I’ve always had creative control. I’ve got more confidence now. I’m less dependent on people’s opinions.

“I had a very clear idea about how I wanted the album to sound from almost from when I wrote the first song. The first I wrote was the title track and everything led on from there. It felt very centred.”

Tom will be performing tracks from his latest release on a UK-wide tour that kicks off in Glasgow tomorrow. He adds: “Everyone tells me that the Barrowland is an incredible venue. I think the best way to hear my music is to hear it live.

“I’m quite excited for people to hear this music for the first time in this way. It’s quite 70s to tour while the music is coming out. I find it quite exciting.”

Tom Odell will play the Barrowlands tomorrow.
