A VISCERAL new production of Shakespeare's Richard II will discus the limits of power in Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay in January.
Tragedy of King Richard the Second will be broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London to The Scala and Theatr Colwyn.
Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.
Taking on the mantle of the doomed king is veteran Shakespearean actor Simon Russell Beale.
Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy, as well as a winning turn as Falstaff in the BBC's triumphant 2012 The Hollow Crown interpretations of Henry IV parts I and II.
The first in a series of four of the Bard's greatest historical plays will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.
Richard II screens to both cinemas on Tuesday, January 15 at 7pm.
Tickets for the Scala are £15, from merlinprestatyn.admit-one.eu and £12, with concessions, for Theatr Colwyn at theatrcolwyn.co.uk.
