Online retail giant Amazon has taken a bold stand and banned the sale of Kodi TV boxes and other pirate devices from its website.

A policy update from the company states that anyone selling products that "promote, facilitate or enable" illegal access to copyrighted TV will have their accounts suspended.

Kodi users: What to do if you receive a letter alleging a breach of online copyright

The online retailer announced it was joining the fight to crack down on illegal streaming just weeks after the Premier League was granted a High Court order to block illicit internet browsers.

Glasgow Times:

Kodi is a free service that streams apps and on-demand services onto your TV.

The open-source feature allows users to edit and customise it to suit their household viewing needs. In short, it's a clever bag-of-tricks.

How you use your Kodi can become a bit questionable if you choose to go down the third-party add-ons road and start installing builds that give you access to paid-for content for free like sport, movies and live events.

Doing so would mean that you are potentially watching legally infringing copyright material.

With all the added focus on kodi from Intellectual Property watchdogs like FACT, the UK Government and their pending Digital Economy Bill, nation-wide, multi-agency task forces and digital content providers, the landscape of the platform is bound to change.

Amazon has never permitted the sale of pirate TV players, but had previously done little to stop the sale of the devices on its site.

Glasgow Times:

But they will now take 'immediate' action to stop sales of Kodi boxes and similar devices.

The policy update goes on to say: "It is your responsibility to source and sell products that do not promote, promise the facilitation of, or actively enable the infringement of or unauthorised access to digital media or other protected content,' Amazon's policy reads.

"If you sell these products, we may immediately suspend or terminate your selling privileges and destroy inventory in our fulfilment centres without reimbursement.

'In addition, if we determine that your account has been used to engage in fraud or other illegal activity, remittances and payments may be withheld or forfeited."
