HEALTH and safety obviously wasn't such a pressing concern in 1962 as it is today.
How else can you explain the crowds about to be enveloped in clouds of stoor and dust by this demolished Gorbals tenement block?
Today, the whole area would be sealed off to the public before even a single brick wall was dismantled.
Mind you, we doubt if the old Gorbalites took too kindly to being ordered about by a bunch of council jobsworths. Some of the people in the watching crowd were probably born and brought up in those old tenements. You try telling them that they can't watch them coming down!
As the old Gorbals disappeared, new, high-rise homes were reaching skywards.
It's just a shame that the modern flats weren't as well built and didn't last as long as their sandstone neighbours.
