A former Glasgow nightclub is set to welcome party-goers again for the first time in eight years.

Iconic city venue The Arches will return in a new series of dance music events being launched by Watchtower in partnership with Platform, the events group which has occupied the space at the Hielanman's Umbrella since 2018.

These events - titled New World - will be the venue's first 'club' nights since the Arches' closure in 2015.

Watchtower founder Tom Ketley hopes that it will appeal to clubbers who share fond memories of The Arches as well as the younger generation who never got to experience it.

He said: “This project is of huge cultural significance for music in Glasgow, Scotland and beyond. Seeing the unfortunate closure of numerous venues in recent years has been hard on the industry.

"The launch of a new large-scale event series in the city centre will bring job opportunities, boost the local economy, and most importantly provide a music space for the next generation to enjoy.

"The venue’s history is renowned, and it holds a special place in people’s hearts, so we know that today’s news will mean so much to so many.

"Having delivered safe and successful events in Scotland for the past 10 years we know what it takes to launch a project of this scale.

"Glasgow is legendary for having one of the best crowds in the world and our aim is to champion that by attracting dance music fans from all over the UK and beyond."

The Arches was one of the city's most popular nightlife spots for over 20 years, with big events over the years including Slam, which featured Underworld and electronic duo Daft Punk in their first UK performance.

It was so treasured that over 40,000 people petitioned to reinstate the licence when bosses had it removed.

It closed after entering administration.

New World will launch on October 21, with the full line-up for the event being announced on Tuesday, September 12.
