THEY say actors should never work with children or animals...

But Glasgow-born film star Billy Boyd was more than happy to break the rules as he let his dog Griffin take centre stage to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.

The Lord of the Rings star was on a visit to Glasgow University Vet School to hear the latest news about the appeal to raise £10million for a new, state-of-the-art small animal hospital.

Griffin, a springer spaniel, has been treated at the Vet School in the past for an eye problem, back pain and a tail condition, and Billy was keen to show his gratitude to vets and nurses.

He said: "Coming back to the Small Animal Hospital has given me the chance to say thanks to the staff for all they have done for Griffin.

"He has always been in the best hands possible when he has been receiving treatment.

"And the attention and understanding they give to owners is very reassuring too."

Billy also urged animal lovers to take part in this Sunday's Doggy Dawdle.

The sponsored walk is to take place at the Vet School's beautiful Garscube Estate, near Bearsden.
