SIR Sean Connery has backed a legal bid to halt the merger of HBOS and Lloyds TSB.

The Merger Action Group said the former 007 actor sent them a personal message of support last night, on the eve of a hearing at the Competition Appeal Tribunal.

The campaign group said Sir Sean made it clear he did not believe the merger was in the best interests of Scotland or HBOS.

MAG spokesman, Edinburgh architect Malcolm Fraser, wel-comed the comments.

He said: "We have been greatly encouraged by the backing we have received from such a diverse cross-section of the Scottish public, from employees and customers of HBOS, to leading businessmen and politicians."

MAG was formed to take a last-ditch legal challenge to the deal to CAT which decides on competition issues.
