GLENCAIRN grabbed a last-gasp winner to stun derby rivals Cambuslang at Somervell Park.

Trailing 1-0 to Kevin Ogilvy's 63rd-minute effort in the Sectional League Cup opener, a sensational finish saw Glens secure the points.

Reduced to 10 men following the first-half dismissal of Mark McManus following a goalmouth bust-up, the visitors were rewarded for their perseverance four minutes from time when newcomer Steven McGovern rose to glance home a Paul Quinn free-kick.

A point apiece looked the likely outcome, but it's never wise to assume anything in the Junior game.

In the 88th minute, referee Alan Newlands awarded Cambuslang a penalty kick. Glens keeper Keith McLaren beat Jamie Carson to a through ball, but the whistler was unhappy with his raised studs and, even though there was no contact, a spot-kick was given - correctly in my opinion.

However, Paul Hughes blasted the ball high over the crossbar to deny his team a last-gasp winner and, as Cambuslang's heads went down, there was yet another twist.

Glens raced upfield and substitute Stephen McGladrigan was brought down in the penalty area by full-back Gary Lynch as he bored in on goal.

Mr Newlands waved the red card at Lynch and the misery was compounded when Tony Fraser fired home the winner. RESULTS Central District League Cup.

Cambuslang gaffer Alan Wardlaw said: "I am happy with the performance but not the result. If our penalty had gone in then I'm sure we would have won the game, but that is no criticism of Hughesy, who otherwise had a terrific game."
