Annie Lennox's daughter is 'understandably anxious' about the fate of her missing boyfriend following a kayaking accident, according to police.

A huge search operation continued today, after Talia Lennox and Ian Jones's kayak capsized on the Hudson River in upstate New York on Saturday.

The couple had set off from an historic home in Staatsburg, north of Poughkeepsie, in Dutchess County. Ms Lennox was in the water for  20 minutes following the accident before being picked up by a passing vessel. Mr Jones, 32, has not been seen since.

Captain John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office said: "Unfortunately he has not been located."

Ms Lennox, 22, who was unhurt, "is doing okay" added the officer, but he added she was "understandably upset and is understandably anxious for some results. She is anxious to find him."

Mr Watterston said the incident sent out a strong message of the importance of water users wearing life jackets, adding that the case was "a sad reminder of that."

He added: "Going out into the river in a kayak can be more dangerous than people expect. The Hudson River has a strong current and people aren't prepared."

Mr Watterson said "extensive resources" had been committed to the search with marine patrols and dive teams from the sheriff's office and other agencies searching the river and the shore near where Mr Jones was last seen. A New York State police helicopter and numerous officers on foot and in boats have been involved.

Sheriffs deputies continued the search today.

Mr Watterston, who said foul play is not suspected in the incident, issued a further description of 6ft 3inches tall Mr Jones who was last seen wearing jeans and a denim shirt in case he had scrambled clear of the river.

They have urged anyone who sees someone matching this description to contact the sheriff's office.
