A GLASGOW school is in the final stages of a bid to set up a multi-sensory safe space.

St Charles' Language Unit and Primary School is competing against 191 other projects across the UK, with Scalloway Primary in Shetland the only other Scottish school.

If it wins enough votes, it will receive £25,000 for the equipment from One Family Foundation for a pioneering project to transform a disused classroom into a multi-sensory calm room.

"We’ve had support from Simple Minds, who have allowed us to use one of their tracks in a promotional video and Mark Dallas of the Insane Wrestling franchise," said Elaine Ross, head teacher at St Charles in Maryhill.

"Mark and some Insane Wrestling champions took part in an event in Tesco Maryhill. And Tesco has been fabulous and allowed parents to set up a table promoting the project.

"We have had a great number of member so the public registering with the foundation and voting for us.

"Maureen McKenna, director of education for Glasgow City Council has been extremely supportive and corporate emails are being sent out across the council to gain votes. Schools from across the city are sharing the voting link on their Facebook pages and retweeting our twitter feed."
