Game of Thrones star James Cosmo will return to his hometown of Clydebank to perform a reading of a special poem to commemorate the Clydebank Blitz.

The Scottish actor, who plays Jeor Mormont in the hit HBO series, will be part of a poignant service which is being put on by Kilbowie St Andrew’s Church to remember those who were killed during the tragic events of 75 years ago.

Glasgow Times:

The Clydebank Post reports that Denis Agnew of Clydebank Blitz Memorial Group commissioned The Holy City from playwright Stewart Conn for famous Clydebank James Cosmo to read it.

The public is invited to attend the service which Mr Agnew, a councillor for Clydebank Central, says will be a “dignified” event.

Mr Agnew told the Post: “James Cosmo has agreed to come along and read the poem on the day as a commemoration it the church. It won’t be a performance, as such, that would be wrong, but a rendition of the poem we commissioned from Stewart Conn.”

The councillor, who has a background in showbusiness and the arts, had known relatives of James Cosmo and managed to scoop the famous name to read the poem.

Stewart Conn was born in Glasgow in 1936, and grew up in Kilmarnock. He has been called "one of Scotland’s most skilled and wide-ranging poets".

His work with its distinctive rhythmic and lyrical qualities, has been widely published, anthologised and translated. Mr Agnew said: “Stewart Conn is a wonderful writer and poet, and he understood what was required when we commissioned this piece. He would be a young boy at the time of the Blitz, but as the writer he has certainly captured the feeling.”

Clydebank Blitz Memorial Group was formed in 2000 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz in 2001. West Dunbartonshire Council had previously organised the affairs.

For the 60th, the group organised a play, The Night of the Blitz, and managed to get some well-known Scottish actors like Jimmy Logan, Russell Hunter, Billy McColl and others to perform.

The group wants to mark the bombing of Clydebank on March 13 and 14 in 1941 by Nazi Germany.

Mr Agnew added: “People have done so much great work to commemorate the Clydebank Blitz, and everyone has their own recollections.

"Our part is to mark the occasion with a poignant service, with the proper dignity it deserves.”
