MORE than 50 Glasgow homes were left without electricity for 14 hours after three separate power cuts plunged them into darkness.

Scottish Power has now apologised to residents in Garnethill after a cable fault led to persistent cuts over the course of a week.

A total of 58 homes in Buccleuch Street, West Graham Street and Scott Street were affected.

The first lost of power came last Saturday, March 26, when power was cut for three hours.

This happened again on Thursday and on Friday residents were left in darkness from 6.30pm to 2am the following morning.

Scottish Power said engineers were unable to track down the exact location of the cable fault due to a glitch, so they changed a number of fuses to try and alleviate the problem but this was not always successful.

The nature of the fault is still unknown but could have been caused by water leaking into the underground system, it is understood.

A spokeswoman for the company said they are hopeful the fault has now been resolved but they can not be certain.

One Garnethill resident, Bill Beckett, told the Evening Times: “This not good enough.

“Everyone accepts the occasional power cut but three times in one week is unacceptable.

“And we were without power for over seven hours through the night on Friday.

“I have a gas cooker so I was able to make food but there is no doubt this will have caused difficulties for some residents.”

He said that engineers arrived in the area in the early hours on Saturday morning to fix the fault - but this caused noise which meant he was unable to sleep.

Mr Beckett added: “It has been very disruptive for me and other residents.

"I would like some assurances that this wont happen again.”

Residents received text messages from Scottish Power during the cuts which updated them on the progress of the work.

As part of this they were advised to unplug all electrical items in their homes.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Power said: “We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.

“We are aware of the issue and have carried out extensive testing work.

“There were multiple factors involved and we hope that the work carried out will resolve the matter.”
