A SECTION of Glasgow Green could be transformed into a playground for adults.

A campaign has been launched to raise £24,000 to fund an outdoor gym in the park, east of the city centre.

The Friends of Glasgow Green want to install a range of exercise equipment on the site of a former gym, originally installed in 1860.

A Mr D G Flemming, a successful businessman from Glasgow who moved to Manchester, donated money to build the feature 156 years ago after he spotted one in an English park.

All that remains is a large metal frame which was originally equipped with swings and gymnasium rings.

It is understood the Friends would seek to preserve this feature also adding new gym equipment.

The specifics of the part have not been outlined yet but it is thought it could be similar to a well-used outdoor gym at the Botanic Gardens in the city's west end.

Trisha Ingram, chair of Friends of Glasgow Green said: "We think bringing back an outdoor gym to Glasgow Green is important for a number of reasons.

"It’s about making the gym accessible for all, no contracts, no fees, you choose the time in a relaxed atmosphere.

"It is about making changes easier with you in charge whilst also enjoying this fantastic park."

The group have already raised £5,000 of their £24,000 target and are now calling for local people to support their bid, which they say has the support of Glasgow City Council.

Ian Goodman, My Park Scotland project manager, said: "This is a fantastic project and highlights what MyParkScotland is here for, to help park improvement projects developed by Friends of Parks and other local groups raise funds through donations from the general public."

MyParkScotland is an independent Scottish charity which works to support Scotland’s parks.

The outdoor gym is just one of a number of park projects in Glasgow MyParkScotand are involved in.

Others include plans for new island homes for Hogganfield Grebes and a Maryhill mini-multi playpark at Ledgowan Place, Maryhill.
