FOOTBALL fans are calling for the resignation of a chief executive following allegations of "sexist" and "homophobic" comments.

Fans of Hamilton Academical FC has released a statement asking Colin McGowan to consider his position.

The statement suggests Mr McGowan should not be involved with the club due to both comments posted on the Accies website and an interview in the Scotsman on Sunday newspaper.

The website statement reads: "In light of the recent statement by Mr McGowan dated 08/04/2016, which has been published on the clubs official site and has been widely condemned within Scottish football as being sexist, as well as the subsequent stories regarding Mr McGowan's apparent homophobic stance during an interview which he conducted with the Scotsman newspaper where he stated "44 homosexual violinists" would receive funding from the government but not community football clubs, we also list the attempted intimidation of fans where "trouble makers would be dealt with" throughout the aforementioned statement."

The statement mentioned by the fans club was posted by Mr McGowan on the Hamilton Accies official website.

In it, the chief executive asks rowdy fans not to swear in front of "young ladies and women."

It reads: "I wish I could finish on a positive note but the unacceptable behaviour of the few I’ve mentioned will have to be dealt with so in advance of tomorrow’s game against Dundee I would like all fans to remember at NDP we have many young children and a fair share of young ladies and women who have no desire to hear outbursts of anger, rage and foul language while trying to enjoy a Saturday afternoon out."

The comments the fans club has claimed are homophobic were made in an interview in Scotland on Sunday in 2005 when Mr McGowan was with Raith Rovers.

He said: ""If 44 homosexual violinists wanted a grant they would get 5m but a community football club can't get a penny."

The fans' statement also claims that Mr McGowan has said in interviews that he doesn't attend away games, doesn't stay for home games and "doesn't have an interest in football."

It finishes, "In short it is the position of the fans that Mr McGowan is someone who should not be involved or associated with Hamilton Academical Football Club and therefore we wish him to consider his position as Chief Executive."

The Evening Times has contacted Hamilton Academical Football Club for comment and is awaiting a response.
