Shawlands residents are urged to get mobile with a new £10,000 cycling drive.

The team behind the campaign to create a Shawlands business improvement district (BID) have secured the funding to promote European Mobility Week.

From September 16 to 22, the steering group will be organising a host of bike-themed events for all ages and abilities.

Lisa McLaughlin, Shawlands BID Coordinator, said: "I am really happy to receive this funding as a ‘developing BID’, these opportunities are usually only available to ‘working BIDs’.

"We have had great feedback from the businesses so far and have some fantastic events planned for all the family: from family bike tours, tuition for the under fives, confidence building for those adults whose bikes rarely see the light of day and also bike maintenance and servicing.

"There will be lots more going on and it will be a really fun weekend."

A BID is a business-led partnership managed by businesses in the area and designed to improve trading conditions in a high street or town.

In 2015 Shawlands Business Association secured £40,000 in funding from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council to create a BID in Shawlands.

The process to become a business improvement district can take up to 12 months.

It involves in-depth discussions with local businesses to establish their requirements and priorities, comprehensive business and consumer surveys and the creation of a detailed BID business plan and proposal.

To generate investment for the area a levy would be charged to every business in the BID area with the business plan detailing how this money would be spent over a five-year term.

A ballot involving the business community would determine if the project is given the go ahead.

BID Scotland has given the opportunity to secure funding of up to £10,000 for each local BID toward the cost of hosting sustainable transport events.

Lisa added: "Working with local businesses including Corner Bikes and Freeflow Bikes along with organisations such as South West Community Cycles, Play on Pedals and Soul Riders, this will be a great opportunity for the businesses and community to work together.

"We are expecting a lot of visitors to Shawlands that weekend so our cafes and coffee shops will benefit from that along with the other retail businesses.

"We also want to encourage people to walk or use the bus services for Shawlands so there will be additional projects for this launched that weekend."
