The family of a five-year-old girl who tragically died in a car crash are planning a tribute to her at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Niree Johnstone, from Paisley, will be remembered when a picture taken at her first Celtic game last season is beamed onto the big screen at Parkhead.

The tot was the only victim of the crash which happened back in July after the car she was travelling in collided with another at the junction of Sergeant Law Road and Glennifer Road in Paisley.

A post mortem revealed the youngster died of a broken neck.

Now 20 of her friends and family will attend Celtic’s match against Aberdeen to take part in a round of applause for Niree when the image is beamed before kick-off and at half time.

Among the crowd will be her dad Steven who learned the heartbreaking news of his daughter’s passing while on holiday in Turkey with his partner Fiona O’Donnell, and her daughters Erin and Natasha.

Her devastated godfather Robert Johnstone, whose is Steven’s twin brother, said: “She loved going to see Celtic with her dad. She would stay with him at the weekends and they would go to games.

“She love to do anything her dad did, she just adored him and she lived for her family.”

The past week has been particularly difficult for the family as Niree would have been six and she was also due to start primary two at St Catherine’s in the town.

Robert said: “She was a fun wee girl, she loved to sing and dance, and anything pink.

“All of our family is mostly boys so when came into our lives, it was unbelievable.”

More than a month after the tragedy, Robert admits the family are understandably not coping.

He said: “My brother is scared to smile because he thinks he shouldn’t. We are all heartbroken.”

He added: “It is very difficult, she was meant to be going into primary two. We are never away from the graveside.”

Robert admits he has been overwhelmed by the support of Celtic fans who have got in touch in their droves to pledge their support to the tribute.

He contacted the club to ask them to show the image and after they agreed he shared a post on some of Celtic’s fan pages which has since gone viral.

Many fans have even offered to make banners in memory of Niree.

He said: “The support has been fantasticand Niree would have loved what we are doing.

“If you see the picture on the screen, stand up and get involved for Niree.”
