A NEW college course is to teach people how to become YouTube stars.

City of Glasgow College is to show students how to go viral with their vlogs - a video blog - and become a hit on social media.

Starting in September, the course, entitled How To Be A YouTuber/Vlogger, will run for ten weeks and will be taught by an experienced ‘YouTuber’ in a webcam-equipped classroom in the college’s new City campus on Cathedral Street.

Kay Sheridan, Head of The Faculty of Education and Society, said: “This inventive evening course is already catching people’s attention and not surprising given the huge popularity of social media and vlogging.

"Although it is primarily for those who have some knowledge of using IT, I’m sure anyone who is keen to find out how to set up their own channel; reach a particular audience or just get more out of Facebook and Twitter will really enjoy it.”

Students enrolled on the course will spend ten weeks learning the basics of how to create, maintain and roll out a successful YouTube channel.

They will also learn skills such as retention, online security, promotion through social media and trends in social networking.

The evening course How To Be A YouTuber/Vlogger will begin in September 2016 and is aimed at anyone with rudimentary IT skills and a basic knowledge of social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

Launched in 2005, YouTube is the world’s largest video-sharing website and currently has more than one billion users.

Members are able to create their own ‘channels’ on the website, through which they can share originally-created video content with a global audience.

Particularly successful video makers can earn a full-time income from advertising via the website’s partner programme, a scheme which is aimed at users who attract a large amount of viewers.
