A TOP cop re-examining the unsolved murder of a teenager who was brutally killed 20 years ago has said a BBC Crimewatch appeal has had a positive response.

Over 20 calls were received during the Crimewatch programme on Monday which urged members of the public to come forward with information on the killer of Caroline Glachan.

The 14-year-old was attacked on August 25, 1996 on the banks of the River Leven in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire late at night then left half submerged in the freezing water to die.

The 14-year-old was killed while taking a shortcut to meet her 18-year-old boyfriend who lived in the neighbouring town of Renton.

Despite numerous police appeals for information over the past two decades, no one has ever been charged with her murder.

Officers from Police Scotland, however, remain committed to finding her killer and recently made a fresh appeal for help and information.

Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr made a further appeal on the BBC Crimewatch programme. The programme focused on Caroline’s murder and featured Caroline’s mother, Margaret McKeich and her best friend, Joanne Menzies.

Detective Superintendent Kerr said that he was "hopeful that some calls could assist with the investigation."

Some of the calls related to the identity of the hooded man in the artist impression, and others offered information in relation to the general inquiry.

Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr from Homicide Governance and Review Team said: “We have received a positive response following last night’s appeal on the Crimewatch programme.

“More than 20 calls were received and the information given to police will now be followed up by the officers from the Homicide Governance and Review Team and I am hopeful that some calls could assist with the investigation.

The Evening Times revealed last week that Scotland's top forensic scientists are planning to re-examining hundreds of items of evidence in a bid to solve the murder.
Over 300 items including clothing and samples from the crime scene could be tested over the next few months as part of Police Scotland’s fresh bid to catch the killer of Caroline Glachan.
