THE FORMER husband of radio DJ Suzie McGuire forced his car through concrete bollards in a bid to get away from police, a court heard.

Derek Mitchell, 37, was spotted by police driving erratically but failed to stop when activated blue lights.

He swerved along the road before mounting the kerb and forcing his Chevrolet Orlando with - private plate - through a set of concrete bollards.

Police later found Mitchell at his home in East Kilbride where he admitted being the driver.

His lawyer claimed he was “under an enormous amount of stress and struggling to cope” at the time, weeks before he went on trial for domestic assault.

Accountant Mitchell pled guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to driving dangerously on August 31, 2014 on Newlands Road, near Glasgow.

Sheriff Mungo Bovey QC disqualified Mitchell from driving for 27 months and ordered him to pay £1000 within seven days which he will get back in a year if he’s of good behaviour.

Mitchell was given 300 hours of unpaid work and ordered to alcohol counselling after being convicted of three assaults on his ex wife Suzie McGuire in 2011.

Ms McGuire said Mitchell's attacks lead to her trying to take her own life in March 2013 in a bid to escape a "life of hell".
