A MAN has been jailed after an assault on a woman which saw him flick a lit cigarette in her direction - narrowly missing a four-month old baby.

Andrew Porter, 20, was in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to several charges including assaulting the woman and police officers.

The Procurator Fiscal depute told the court that the incident took place at a block of flats on 200 Lincoln Avenue, Knightswood.

She explained it was around 9.20pm on December 3, last year, when Porter banged loudly on the door of one of the flats.

The court heard when the woman opened the door, Porter flicked a lit cigarette towards her which narrowly missed her friend’s four-month old baby.

He was asked to stop this behaviour, and Porter reacted by punching the woman on her head which caused her to fall to the ground.

He then picked up her handbag and threw it towards her face.

Police were contacted and an ambulance was also called.

The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for observation.

She also had some bruising to her hand.

When cops arrived, they found Porter on the 17th floor of the building.

When they approached him, he became extremely aggressive and started shouting racial slurs at one of the officers.

He told that officer: “F**k off back to your own country”.

He was then arrested and he assaulted two police officers by spitting at them repeatedly.

He also assaulted a sergeant by spitting at him.

Porter’s defence agent told the court that his client was extremely drunk at the time of the incident.

He added: “He has little recollection of the incident but he accepts these charges.

“He recognises that these are serious charges.”

His defence agent also argued that his client would lose his tenancy if he was jailed.

Sentencing sheriff Miller sentenced Porter to 270 days in prison for the charges.

His sentence will be backdated to December 5.
