Fire crews have been called out to a massive scrapyard fire in the city's south side.
A staggering 50 firefighters have been at the yard in Helen Street, Ibrox, as members of the public flooded social media sites with images of the skies above Glasgow darkening in what looked like apocalyptic scenes.
Police have also been in attendance as the street was closed to all traffic.
One eyewitness said there were "massive plumes" of black smoke that could be seen from as far as Byres Road, although social media users and readers have reported sightings from miles away.
One Twitter user even posted an image of the smoke from Tarbet in Loch Lomond, almost 40 miles away from the scene.

As well as the smoke having darkended Govan, Scottish Power confirmed shortly after that power had also been cut to many parts of the area.
The company said on Twitter: "Supplies have been removed in #G41 #G51 #Govan #Glasgow. Our engineers are working with fire and rescue teams on-site to restore supplies."

The energy provider also said it hoped power would be brought back by 3am, or sooner if possible.
A total of nine appliances were sent to the scene.
Fire chiefs said a number of tyres and vehicles within the scrap yard have caught fire.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Fire crews are currently in attendance to a fire in a scarp yard in Helen Street."
Some reports have suggested the black smoke was caused after a series of explosions, although this has yet to be confirmed.
