Convicted paedophile and Celtic Boys Club founder Jim Torbett has been tracked down in California just weeks after fresh abuse allegations have been made against him.

Torbett was jailed in 1998 for two-and-a-half years after being found guilty of molesting a group of boys as young as 13 over a seven-year period.

Now, a clip of a heated confrontation between BBC Scotland’s investigations correspondent, Mark Daly, and Torbett has been made public by the BBC.

In the 36-second clip, Mr Daly confronts Torbett as he emerges from a shopping centre.

Mr Daly asks: “Mr Torbett, how do you respond to allegations that you used your position at Celtic Boys Club as a front - a front - for your paedophile activities?”

Torbett refuses to answer as he rushes for his car. However, he does say: “I’m not answering any questions for you. I’ll answer them in court.”

Complete footage of the confrontation can be seen tonight from 6.30pm on BBC Reporting Scotland.

Just last month, more alleged victims of Torbett came forward claiming he sexually abused them during the 80s and 90s, according to BBC programme ‘Football Abuse: The Ugly Side of The Beautiful Game’.

One of the men, Kenny Campbell, claimed he was molested dozens of times by Torbett over a four-year period.

He told the programme: “I trusted the wrong person. It took me years and years to realise that. He’s got a lot to answer for.”

Torbett “vehemently denies” the allegations made against him.

Torbett was first “excused from his duties” as executive of the club in 1996 following allegations of indecent behaviour.

The move came after the then Strathclyde Police confirmed it was investigating claims of indecent behaviour dating back several years before in connection with the club.

Then executive chairman Tony McGuinness said: “The executive of the Celtic Boys Club discussed the allegations made against Jim Torbett.

“Pending the outcome of a full investigation, and in the interests of all parties, Mr Torbett has been excused from his duties at the Celtic Boys Club, which are purely administrative in nature.”
