Last week I had the pleasure of launching the Big Fit Walk in Kirkintilloch to a packed, eager crowd all geared up to participate in a two mile walk down by the beautiful canal and back around again to the leisure centre.

There was food and refreshments waiting for us on our return which was nothing short of a blessing as the sun was splitting the trees which you’ll agree was a rare treat indeed.

The Big Fit Walk aims to inspire communities across Scotland to come together for a walk to celebrate the benefits of being active. It's a fun and social way to show people the joy of a short walk, something I've learned over the years walking around Pollok Park with my pals as we catch up and gab away or more recently with my partner as I try to shift some pounds for my upcoming wedding.

The project provides community groups, workplaces, schools and health walks groups with resources and support to organise a 30 minute led Big Fit Walk during the month of June including an organiser guide, sign-up sheets, posters, stickers and invites.

To give you a little bit of background, The Big Fit Walk has been running for 13 years and it all began with the Falkirk Community Trust and a group of Grangemouth school children. Paths for All, a wonderful Scottish charity, is on a crusade to grow and develop The Big Fit Walk across the country as part of their efforts to champion walking in Scotland, for everyone, every day and everywhere.

This year is extra special as we launch the Big Fit Walk campaign with W.A.L.K East Dunbartonshire. The project offers several health walks, wheelchair friendly walks, dementia friendly walks and walking football sessions which you’ll agree is just fantastic. One thing is very clear though and I saw this first hand myself at the launch that none of this would be possible without the dedication of local volunteers and staff who help to make it all happen. Thankyou so much to you all.

All health walks are free and open to everyone and that's why we’re really hoping around 400 organisers' packs will be snapped up and that we’ll have Big Fit Walks taking place from Shetland to Dumfries all throughout the month. As I'm learning myself everyday, there are just so many benefits from walking more often with stats showing that active people live longer and healthier lives and that regular walking can actually reduce the risk of several illnesses. It can help people to manage their weight which is particularly attractive to me and walking locally helps people to enhance their social connections and mental health.
