A FORMER director of Motherwell Football Club has died at the age of 87.

The Fir Park club confirmed the death of John Swinburne on Sunday.

John held a number of roles at the North Lanarkshire club including commercial manager before joining the Board of Directors in 2000 where he served before stepping down in 2015.

The US born claret and amber fan wrote several books about the club.

He was also elected to the Scottish Parliament back in 2003 on the list vote for Central Scotland, representing the SSCUP, a party he had helped to form to represent the interest of senior citizens.

A club statement said: "John passed away this morning aged 87 after a short but challenging illness.

"Everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to extend our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends at this sad time.

"At the same time, the club remembers a loyal, dedicated, enthusiastic and talented supporter that went over and above for the team he loved."
