Jason Cummings reckons it’s only a matter of time before former Rangers winger Barrie McKay joins him in the senior Scotland side, calling him one of the best players he has ever played with.

Former Hibs forward Cummings made his full international debut last night, coming on as a substitute late on in the narrow friendly defeat to The Netherlands.

And he says that Nottingham Forest teammate McKay has the quality to shine at the highest level.

“I would have him in every single squad,” McKay said.

“He is one of the best players I have played with and I’m sure he will be a big player for Scotland in the future.”

Cummings was on cloud nine as he stepped onto the Pittodrie pitch to make his Scotland bow, and he almost had a dream start to his international career when a chance immediately fell his way.

Unfortunately, the striker didn’t catch his effort from the edge of the area properly, allowing Jasper Cillessen to save.

“It was a dream come true to win my first cap, but it felt a bit bittersweet,” he said.

“I had a great chance to score as soon as I came on. It was a terrific opportunity but I couldn’t take it.

“I’m a bit gutted but I will look back and be delighted with my cap.

“I could already see the headlines. I thought I was going to get my first goal.

“It was my first touch and it just came across to me a bit quickly. As a striker I would expect to score that.

“Hopefully that will be the first of many caps. I was buzzing to get called up and to get on the park was a bonus.”

With Scotland hardly being blessed with numerous options at the sharp end of the field at present, Cummings sees a real opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot in the squad.

“It has given me the hunger to win a load more caps and get on the scoresheet,” he said.

“There are not that many strikers around just now so there is a jersey to be taken if I want it.

“The whole experience has been great, and the lads have made us feel so welcome.”
