A Scots secondary school teacher faces being struck off after being accused of having a "Free Derry" Christmas card and a "Bobby Sands" mug in their classroom.

The teacher, who hasn't been named, faces a string of charges which also includes allegations of writing the term "h** town" in notes during a development day.

Another charge alleges that the teacher used "prior knowledge" of a Modern Studies exam to "advise pupils on the areas to study in advance" of the exam.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland has also accused the teacher of having "inappropriate contact with pupils personally by email."

The watchdog's website says: "On exact dates unknown you did have inappropriate items within your classroom including a "Free Derry" Christmas card, a "Free Derry" postcard and a "Bobby Sands" mug."

The charge continues: "...use inappropriate language, within your notes at a development day in August 2014 in that you did write 'h** town' in your notes."

Glasgow Times:

"Share music with a colleague who was a probationer, which was inappropriate and in doing so, you did breach your employer's Information Technology Policy."

Another charge read: "On exact dates unknown during the 2013/2014 academic year you did use your prior knowledge of the content of the 2014 Modern Studies exam to advise pupils on the areas to study in advance of the exam and have inappropriate contact with pupils personally by email.

"And in light of the above, it is alleged that your fitness to teach is impaired and you are unfit to teach".

Bobby Sands was an Irish Republican Army member who died at the notorious Maze Prison in Northern Ireland after going on hunger strike.

A hearing is scheduled to meet next week in Edinburgh to decide the teacher's fate.
