ROUKEN Glen Park in East Renfrewshire has been named the best kept park in Scotland.

Each year, the Fields in Trust awards showcase some of the UK's best open spaces and highlight the efforts of the people who ensure they can be enjoyed by the public.

Now in its sixth year, the awards celebrate open spaces from sports pitches to children's playgrounds, bicycle trails and country parks, safeguarding them for future generations.

Charity chief executive Helen Griffiths, said: “The people of Giffnock have sent a clear message that they love their local park and on behalf of everyone at Fields in Trust, I would like to congratulate Rouken Glen Park.

“These awards give us the opportunity to shine a light on some of the UK's most beautiful green spaces up and down the country.

“Despite their undeniable contribution to the happiness and health of our communities, parks and outdoor spaces are often undervalued.

“This annual event not only gives the public the opportunity to champion their favourite park but allows us to showcase some of the people and organistions that work tirelessly to ensure the up-keep and community enjoy their wonderful spaces.”

East Renfrewshire environment convener Alan Lafferty said: “We are delighted to have been named Scotland’s Best Park – a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to get behind the park, in this publically voted award.

“Rouken Glen continues to thrive and we have had almost a million visitors to this wonderful green space so far in 2017.

“The park is cherished by so many residents and visitors from far and wide and it benefits everyone who uses it, from dog walkers, runners, cyclists and even boat-fanatics throughout the year.

“However, the park wouldn’t be what it is without our dedicated staff who maintain and improve it - a massive congratulations and thanks go to them all.”
