CELTIC

CRAIG GORDON (7): Vital early save from Kums and had another couple of comfortable stops, but wasn’t over-worked despite Anderlecht’s superiority in the first half. Could do nothing about Simunovic own goal, and had to touch away a stinging shot by Hanni as Anderlecht pushed late on.

MIKAEL LUSTIG (5): Looked nervy in the opening stages and had his hands full with the threat of Onyekuru, but settled into the game and managed to quell the threat of the Nigerian as the night wore on. Also tried to get forward when he could.

DEDRYCK BOYATA (5): Stood up well to early Anderlecht pressure, but slack pass almost cost Celtic before the break and it wasn’t the only time he was sloppy with his distribution against his countrymen.

JOZO SIMUNOVIC (5): Was keeping it simple and dealing with most of what came his way until disaster struck on the hour as he got his head to Appiah’s cross and inadvertently directed the ball past Gordon. Tried to make amends by sending a snap-shot just over.

KIERAN TIERNEY (5): Wasn’t getting forward as often as normal in the first half as Celtic struggled with approach to the game, but started to make inroads in the second half before his poor clearance led to Appiah’s cross for opener.

SCOTT BROWN (6): Up against it on his record-breaking 69th appearance in European competition trying to police the outstanding Hanni, but stuck to his task and managed to influence the middle of the park more after the break. Solid enough showing.

STUART ARMSTRONG (3): Was running up blind alleys and was uncharacteristically wasteful in possession in a sloppy showing. Looked way off the pace, and no surprise to see him replaced at the break.

JAMES FORREST (5): Spent the first half helping out Lustig with the threat of Onyekuru, meaning his attacking threat was stunted. Had a good low effort well saved by Boeckx at the start of the second half, but didn’t look too comfortable when switched to right wing-back role.

CALLUM MCGREGOR (4): Anonymous in the first half and fared little better in the second. Just didn’t get involved enough in the game at all, and had little bearing on proceedings.

SCOTT SINCLAIR (3): Couldn’t get into the game in the opening half hour on the left, and was moved in to play off Dembele. Still nothing came off for him though, and hooked at half-time after an ineffective display to say the least.

MOUSSA DEMBELE (5): Ball wasn’t sticking with the Frenchman at all, meaning that Celtic weren’t getting any respite in the opening period. Much improved after the break as he at last provided a threat, before being replaced with 15 minutes to go.

SUBSTITUTES:

TOM ROGIC (3): On at the break as Celtic looked to turn the tide of the game, but often caught in two minds about where he should be positioned, and was sometimes ponderous in possession.

OLIVIER NTCHAM (6): Also sent on at the interval and provided an impetus to his side that had been lacking straight away. Tidy on the ball and added a composure in the midfield that Celtic were sorely needing.

ODSONNE EDOUARD (2): Given last quarter of an hour in place of Dembele after his hat-trick heroics against Motherwell at the weekend, but little time to make an impact.

ANDERLECHT

FRANK BOECKX (6): Nothing to do until getting down well to touch a low Forrest effort around the post shortly after the re-start. Showed good hands to hold onto decent effort from Ntcham too.

DENNIS APPIAH (6): Managed to curtail the runs of Tierney and gave the Celtic full-back something to think about going the other way. It was his cross that Simunovic directed past Gordon for the opening goal, then was subbed late on.

SERIGNE M’BODJI (6): Comfortable night for the most part for the centre-back against Dembele before being replaced with 15 minutes to go after picking up a knock.

UROS SPAJIC (6): Untroubled by the efforts of the Celtic attack as both he and Mbodji tidied up around Dembele and never looked unduly troubled.

IVAN OBRADOVIC (6): Kept Forrest hemmed in up the Celtic right for most of the evening with the help of Onyekuru, and tried to provide support to the attacker when he could.

LEANDER DENDONCKER (6): Competed well in the middle of the park as he marshalled first Sinclair then Ntcham. Not as cultured on the ball as some of his teammates in the engine room, but vital contribution nonetheless.

SVEN KUMS (5): Denied by Gordon when presented with a glorious opportunity early on, but influence faded somewhat after a bright opening.

PIETER GERKENS (6): Full of energy and a real handful to pick up in an advanced midfield position, making clever runs in behind the Celtic defence which weren’t picked out for the most part. Replaced for last 10 minutes.

ADRIEN TREBEL (7): Spectacular attempt in the first half tested Gordon’s handling, and always on hand to pick up the loose balls in the middle of the park. Kept things moving well.

SOFIANE HANNI (8): The skipper is the man who makes his side tick, and he was hugely impressive as he dictated the play in the first half. Brown managed to stop the supply into him later in the game, but a joy to watch him at work.

HENRY ONYEKURU (7): Created a great early chance for Kums with a fine pull-back, and terrorized Lustig in the first half with his pace and direct running. Faded from the game in the second half though as Lustig and Forrest got to grips with their task.

SUBSTITUTES:

JOSUE SA (2): On for last 15 minutes, slotting in at centre-half for the injured Mbodji but little to do.

LUKASZ TEODORCZYK (2): Given last 10 minutes but couldn’t alter the course of the game.
