RUNNERS are gearing up for the annual Santa Dash on Sunday.

Thousands of people wearing Santa suits will take part in the festive event in the city centre.

First Glasgow is supporting the 5k charity run again this year with the offer of free return travel for anyone dressed in a Santa outfit.

Race participants in costumes and those holding a race card can also obtain single travel for £1.40 for families and friends.

Last year, 7500 people took part in the run and more than £200,000 has been raised for charity since it was launched in 2006.

This year's chosen charity is the Beatson Cancer Charity and First will be raising money for it and the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow.

A 35 strong team from First Glasgow are also taking part from the Caledonian depot.

First Glasgow managing director Andrew Jarvis said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting the Santa Dash with free travel for participants and reduced fares for families and friends.

“This is a wonderful event and a great spectacle which really captures the spirit of Christmas and we are wishing everyone all the very best for a fun day out.”

Trade union learning representative David Cairns will be part of the First Glasgow team.

He said: “This is a wonderful family event and my colleagues and I are delighted to be once again joined by families and friends for it.

“Our team has been busy raising sponsorship and we are overwhelmed by the generosity of fellow staff and our many other supporters.”

Marie Curie Hospice has already benefitted from more than £2800 in donations from the East End bothy team this year.

The Santa Dash will leave from George Square with the warm-up beginning at 9.30am.

Roads and expected to be busy and diversions will be in place so people are asked to allow plenty of additional time for their journeys.
