A SURVEY has been launched by the council to help decide the name of a new primary school in Glasgow's East End.

The Dalmarnock Primary School Community Ballot offers four names for the school including Village Primary School, Commonwealth Primary School, Woodland Primary School and Riverbank Primary School.

Glasgow City Council has involved the community of Dalmarnock in the naming process just as building work on the new £22.8 million school begins.

We previously revealed that a community group was set up which will also be responsible for other tasks such as deciding the school uniform.

The yet-to-be named primary will be built to deal with the influx of new residents who moved into the former athletes’ village.

Dalmarnock’s new primary will provide 14 classrooms, assembly and gym halls; drama and nurture rooms; administrative and office space; and a library.

The news of the names on offer has angered some Dalmarnock residents who felt the school should be called Springfield Primary.

Springfield Primary opened on Allan Street in Dalmarnock in 1969 before closing in 2003 but the council has not even considered the name as an option.

One resident said on a community forum: "I actually think it's offensive that Springfield is not even an option.

"I went to the old one and don't even live in Glasgow anymore let alone Dalmarnock."

Other residents were concerned about the names on offer in the ballot.

One said: "There's that divide again, it's a community.

"Springfield primary, Riverside Primary. I think anyone who has children from Dalmarnock will send them to the school doesn't matter what side you come from."

Another added: "If you ask me, they already have the name picked and doing a dummy poll to make themselves look good.

"I know 99.9 percent of the community wouldn't have chosen any they names.

"The least that council could do for us is give us back the name of the school."

Glasgow City Council said Springfield Primary School did make the longlist.

A group of parents in the catchment area for the school then helped choose the final names to make the shortlist.
