MURDER detectives investigating the shooting of a football boss in Cambuslang have said it was a targeted attack on his life.

Paul McColl staggered through the streets after he was attacked on Borgie Crescent.

The 48-year-old then made his way to the Kirkhill Bar on Cadoc Street where emergency services were eventually called around 8.50pm on Wednesday evening.

Detectives are appealing for information following the attempted murder of the Cambuslang Rangers boss.

Following the incident, police received a report of a car burnt at Turnlaw Road, near East Greenless Road which is believed may have been involved.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Tennant from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team (West) said: “I would like to reassure the public that we believe this to be a targeted attack on the victim and extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the motive and full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We cannot confirm the exact cause of the victim’s injuries at this time, however we have several reports of loud bangs in the area and one line of enquiry is that a firearm was involved.

“This type of reckless violence has no place in our communities and the fact that it happened in a busy residential area will undoubtedly cause concern. Additional patrols will be in the area to provide reassurance and the officers will be happy to assist so feel free to approach them.

“Support from members of the public is going to be absolutely vital to this investigation and I cannot stress enough how important it is that anyone who may have information about what happened comes forward.

“I would like to speak to anyone who was in Borgie Crescent or Cadoc Street last night and saw or heard anything at all suspicious. I would also ask anyone who was in Greenlees Road between 8.30pm and 9pm who may have noticed a car parked or anyone making off from the scene to get in touch.

“I am also appealing for any motorists with dashcams who were the area around the time of the incident last night and may have captured any footage of the incident to please contact police.

“Officers will do absolutely everything we can to find whoever is responsible for this crime and anyone with information that could assist our enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team (West) via 101, quoting incident number 3953 of Wednesday 21 February 2018.

"Alternatively you can call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”

A statement from Cambuslang Rangers said: “The club is saddened to hear the serious injuries sustained by our manager Paul following an incident in Cambuslang.

“Our thoughts are with Paul and his family at this difficult time.”
News of the incident was met with shock from the football community.

Rossvale Juniors said: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cambuslang Rangers Manager Paul McColl who sustained serious injuries last night hoping he makes a full recovery."

Carnoustie Panmure FC added: "Please pass on the thoughts and prayers of everybody at Carnoustie Panmure FC."

Another said she was 'numb' at the news, Nikki Niven said: "Absolutely gutted that this has appended. Numb. Thoughts with Paul and his family."

Cambuslang Rangers cancelled their game with Kello Rovers FC, which was due to take place on Saturday.
