A GLASGOW MP wants the Living Wage and National Minimum Wage structure scrapped to end discrimination against young people.

David Linden Glasgow East SNP MP said that all workers should be paid a Living Wage.

He led a debate in the House of Commons calling for the system to be overhauled.

Currently the UK Government Living Wage is £7.83 an hour, but only for over 25s.

For 21 to 24 the rate is £7.38 while 18 to 20 year-olds get a minimum of £5.90 per hour.

Under 18s receive £4.20 and apprentices are entitled to £3.70 per hour.

Mr Linden said all workers are entitled to a real Living Wage, which is currently £8.75 in Scotland, £10.20 in London.

Mr Linden said: “The UK government must stop discriminating against young people – and change the law to ensure that all workers are entitled to a real Living Wage.

“It is completely unacceptable that younger workers are being penalised just because of their age, and with no account being taken of their needs, responsibilities and living costs.

“The Tories are letting young people down by refusing to end this pay discrimination - with many workers losing out on thousands of pounds a year.”

He said if the UK Government will not act then they should devolve power over the National Minimum Wage to Holyrood to allow Scotland to set a real Living Wage.

"If the UK government won’t change the law then it must devolve the powers so that the Scottish Government can introduce a real Living Wage for all workers in Scotland.”
