THE phone call will take place soon enough between a current and former Rangers manager who both knew a thing or 10 about running a midfield in Liverpool’s colours.

Steven Gerrard is going to seek out the advice of Graeme Souness. Maybe advice is the wrong word. He has plenty of that already. But the two have plenty to chat about and the new man would be daft – and he is certainly not that – not to listen to what his predecessor has to say.

“Graeme is certainly someone who I would like to catch up with and speak to,” Gerrard said. “He is a legend at this football club and someone who I have nothing but admiration for, not just for what he did with Rangers but at Liverpool as well.

“Every time he is on the television I watch him. He is a fascinating man to listen to. If I can use that to my benefit I am never going to turn that down.”

Souness said recently that second is nothing in Glasgow. However, this season Rangers need to finish in that position. Gerrard could have taken over the team for yesterday’s home match with Kilmarnock in the hope his presence would give a suffering group of players a lift but he wasn’t even at the game.

“We want to finish as high up as possible,” said Gerrard. “For the lads that are in charge just now, hopefully they finish strong and positive and as high up as they can. It is important

I take a step back from that and let them go about the business. Then from June 1 I will be charged up and ready to go.

“The important thing for me is to really look into the final three games, continue to assess the players and get the ball rolling to identify people who are going to improve the XI and improve this squad. To make Rangers a better team for when we get going.”
