Fantasy world of fairytales, monsters and Marilyn are all created by Barrhead make-up talent

The thrilling masterpieces were the work of HND Make Up Artistry students from West College Scotland, who presented their end of year extravaganza to friends, family and industry professionals.

Viewers were transported to a fantasy land populated by mythical beasts and fairytale monsters, spectacularly brought to life by the talented students.

There were also tributes to Marilyn Monroe and Gothic glamour.

Hollie McKenzie, 25, from Barrhead, studied at the college’s Greenock campus. She recreated Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes character, Lorelei Lee, for the showcase.

“Make up is my passion, and has been since I was young,” she said. “Often I would raid my gran’s make-up bag for her red lipstick to look and feel like a Hollywood starlet of the 1950s!

“To re-create Lorelei Lee for the show feels like I have come full circle.

“This course and my fantastic lecturers have allowed me to flourish in my chosen profession and they taught me valuable lessons about the make-up industry.”

Dani Cunningham adds the finishing touches to her creation

Dani Cunningham, 30, who is from Renfrew, created an other-worldly ‘bird of paradise’ for the exhibition.

“I’m so happy with the overall look of my character,” said Dani, who is a student at the college’s Paisley campus.

“To have an idea in your head and then to plan and design it, then show everyone what you have created, gives me a real buzz.”

She adds: “I have really enjoyed my time at the college over the last three years.

“It has taught me so much about myself and the industry.”

Emma Park, 23, from Strathblane created the aptly names Jeepers Creepers character.

Emma, who is a Clydebank campus student, said: “I’m gutted my time studying here is coming to an end although I’m excited about going to university after the summer to continue my studies in special effects makeup.

“I hope to be working on big things in the near future – hopefully, one day for the big screen.”

Francesca Hynd, 21, who is from Glasgow, created the glamorous 18th century Black Widow character for the show.

“Imagine going into a job that you love, that thrills and challenges you every day- that's what I'll be doing,” she said.

“I started at West College Scotland when I was 17 in NC Level 6 Make-up, and I have been able to improve my existing skills and have developed new ones.

“Along the way I have done work experience in theatre and television and it only confirms for me that I am going into the industry that I was meant to be in. I combined different types of make-up that I love - wigs, SFX and glamour - to create this character and I'm really proud of how it's all come together.”

Hairdressing, Beauty and Make-up Artistry Head of Sector Karen McIlvenna said: “This event was a wonderful opportunity for our HND Makeup Artistry students to showcase their skills.

“Events like this highlight to our employers and industry partners not only the unique skills and technical abilities of our students, but their approach to their own career management and entrepreneurial pitch of their work.”

She adds: “The students worked extremely hard on creating and perfecting their own personal looks and display areas.

“We are exceptionally proud of what each of them have achieved; they’re a credit to themselves and the college and I’m in no doubt that they will go on to successful careers within the make-up industry.”
