THE daughter of a popular North Glasgow man has paid tribute to her dad after he died following a battle with a life-limiting lung disease.

George Butler, 72, was fighting Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) until his seven-year battle came to end on Sunday, May 27.

George had even quit smoking to improve his health once he was diagnosed with the illness, which makes a person’s breathing increasingly more difficult.

The grandad-of-seven, from Summerston, was surrounded by his family when he took his last breath.

His daughter Kelly, 39, from Yoker, said: "He was in and out of hospital the last few weeks, and he was just deteriorating.

"He didn’t want to be alone and we started staying with him.

"Saturday we knew he was going and he told us, "This is it, I'm dying."

We first reported on George when his family came together to raise funds for the British Lung Foundation.

Kelly and her sister Catherine Butler, 35, from Maryhill joined 25 members of the family to walk Conic Hill in Balmaha last October.

The Butler family lived in Possil before moving to Maryhill.

George, who is also dad to Linsey, 32, was a regular in The Kelvin Dock before his conditioned worsened.

Kelly said: "He had the biggest smile, his smile would light up a room.

"Everybody is mourning, my dad is a family man and he had the heart of a lion

"He would do anything for anybody, he was a very small man with a very big heart."

The family are already planning to have another fundraising drive for the British Lung Foundation after their father's funeral takes place.

They also want to thank the Cordia workers and district nurses who cared for him.

His funeral mass will take place at Immaculate Conception RC Church in Maryhill on Tuesday.

Kelly said: "The funeral is open to everyone. We want faces that knew us when we stayed in Possil before we moved to Maryhill.

"We want anybody and everybody who knows my dad to come. We would get comfort for that."
