Plans to open in a new nightclub in Glasgow's Merchant City have been knocked back.

A developer had applied to Glasgow City Council for permission to transform an unoccupied unit on Albion Street into a club in January.

The new club 'Bijoux' would open in number 58, opposite Blackfriars bar and kitchen.

An application for the club said it would "create a happy environment to the already sociable area" and employ around 22 people from the surrounding area.

Bosses wanted to open from 9pm until 3am on weeknights and weekends.

However, plans have been thwarted after council bosses said it would create unacceptable noise and disturbance for residents, to the detriment of residential area.

The floor plan was also not considered to be in accordance with the Development Plan.

The Merchant City is a nighttime hotspot throughout the week with a number of bars and clubs already operating including O'Neills.

It is not known whether the developer will appeal the decision.
