MORE than £2,000 was raised in less than 24 hours to help a family whose house was destroyed by a lightning strike at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Corn Mill Road, Woodilee, near Kirkintilloch, on Saturday night when a house went up in flames following flash flooding, thunder and lightning, across Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire.

Frank Malcolm and his family could only watch in horror as their dream home was engulfed by flames.

The family were downstairs watching TV when the house was hit by a bolt of lightning.

Frank told the Scottish Sun: “The first I knew anything was wrong was when the TV went off and the electric tripped.

“I went round turning off all the power sockets.

“I went upstairs to do the same and I could hear crackling in the roof then I noticed smoke under the eaves.

“By then the doorbell was ringing and it was a neighbour saying ‘get out, your house is on fire’.

“I got my wife and two kids and we got out.

“The roof was on fire.”

The house, which the family had only been living in for seven months, was ravaged by the blaze.

Now, members of Woodilee Residents Association are now rallying in support of their neighbours and trying to raise £5,000.

Last night, the total passed the £2,000 mark.

A statement on the crowdfunding page said: “This fundraising page has been organised by the Woodilee Residents Association to help provide support to the family with all monies donated going directly to them.

“Any funds received in excess of their requirements will be donated to a charity of their choice.

“At the time of creation the family are not aware of this crowdfunding page.”

Elsewhere, flash flooding was reported in Bishopbriggs and part of Gartconnell Road, in Bearsden, was flooded, leaving a car stranded in about four feet of water.

Local flooding impacted a number of rail services and caused disruption for flights at Glasgow Airport.
