EAST Renfrewshire is hosting a celebration of Scottish cinema throughout the summer with exhibits, events and even some free popcorn.

Barrhead Foundry is the first to host the National Library of Scotland’s brand new exhibit Going to the pictures: Scotland's memories of the cinema, which will tour libraries across the country until 2019.

The library is celebrating the launch of the new exhibit this week with a screening of local filmmaker Tom Marchant’s Night at the Pictures: the story of cinema in Scotland on Wednesday from 2-4pm at Barrhead Foundry.

After the movie, the audience can explore the brand new exhibition from the National Library of Scotland and examine the objects in the Projectionist’s Case handling box. Plus, there will be free tea, coffee and popcorn provided.

Anthony McReavy, chief executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be the first to host this National Library of Scotland exhibition, which is now live and will tour East Renfrewshire libraries until September 2018.

“The display is very colourful and insightful, presenting themes including cinemas through the ages, representations of Scotland on the silver screen, Scottish locations used for major productions, the golden era of cinema, fandom and Scotland’s rich history of documentary film-making.”

Learning workshops and footage from the Moving Image Archive will complement the display.

Ciara McKenna, exhibitions officer at the National Library of Scotland, said: “Scotland is and always has been a nation of film lovers. The majority of us have been to the cinema at least once, and some will recall the glamour and excitement of it all from decades past.

“Our display covers early portrayals of Scotland and its people – from tartan heroes and romantic landscapes to quirky locals and harsh city living. But we have since reclaimed our own stories for the screen with a burgeoning film and documentary-making tradition.

“We hope it will evoke memories of the films, people and cinemas that have been significant in people's lives.”

Everyone is encouraged to pop along for popcorn, the film screening and exhibit on Wednesday from 2-4pm at Barrhead Foundry.

Tom Marchant’s Night at the Pictures: the story of cinema in Scotland will also visit Giffnock Library on Monday, August 20 from 1-3pm.
