FARES on a route between Glasgow and Edinburgh are set for a 92 per cent hike with the introduction of new rolling stock.

ScotRail unveiled its new fleet of electric trains this week, which will run on the major west to east coast route.

But the introduction of the class 385 comes with an unwelcome kicker for some passengers.

From July 21 the cost of a return ticket on the low level route will rise from £13 to £25 during peak times.

The fare on this route had been reduced earlier this year to encourage passengers to take the low level train via Airdrie to ease pressure on the main rail route, which goes via Falkirk High.

The reduction had always been billed as a temporary move.

A ScotRail spokesman said: “We temporarily reduced our fares between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Coatbridge while a small number of services had less seats than usual on the main route via Falkirk High.

“Now that we have delivered over 17,200 extra seats per day, as well as the first of our new Express trains entering service, this temporary fare is coming to an end.”

Meanwhile, ScotRail will be putting on more trains, extra carriages, and adding more stops on routes between key tournament venues across Scotland during the European Championships.

Graham Heald, ScotRail Alliance Head of Customer Experience, said: "I’m delighted to see yet another fantastic sporting event come to Scotland. We’ll be doing all we can to get people to the games, with more trains and extra carriages on key routes.

“However, services are still expected to be busier than usual - especially towards Edinburgh with the festivals beginning next week.

"We ask that customers buy their tickets and plan their journey in advance.”
