I never thought I would be saying this, but I think Odsonne Edouard is going to turn out to be an even better prospect than Moussa Dembele.

I am a massive fan of Dembele and have been ever since he arrived at Celtic. He is already a star and will go on to achieve great things in the game I’m sure.

Dembele has got pace and power, but Edouard showed all the qualities of a top, top striker against Rosenborg. He too has got pace and power, he’s got conviction, and as his two finished on the night amply demonstrated, he has got composure in his finishing.

The greatest thing for a striker to be able to do of course is score goals, but he has other attributes that make him such an asset. He can be direct, he can hold it up, his link-up play is good, he just seems to have all the strings to his bow that any top forward needs.

A lot of people have questioned Celtic’s transfer activity this summer, or lack of it, but don’t forget that they broke their transfer record in signing Edouard. When you take the fee into account, reported to be up to £9million, then that shows just what they think of him. And in my view, it was entirely justified.

A massive transfer fee like that, at least in Scottish terms, could put huge pressure onto the shoulders of any young player, but if anything, it seems to have boosted his confidence. With him now being a permanent signing at the club rather than a loan signing, that gives him more stability, and that can help his performances too.

It was a huge vote of confidence in Edouard that Brendan Rodgers was willing to alter a shape that has proven so successful for him at Celtic in order to accommodate both him and Dembele in the starting line-up.

Most of the worries prior to the Rosenborg game came from the lack of numbers at the back, but there would have been a fair bit of trepidation from Celtic supporters going into the match about the prospect of going in with only Edouard up front with Dembele and Leigh Griffiths out injured.

What Edouard showed on Wednesday night though was that he was more than able to lead the line too as a lone striker. In pre-season he was playing as one of two strikers, and now the manager will know no matter what way he wants to go that he has three strikers who can play those roles more than adequately.

That really augurs well for the future of Celtic. They are spoiled for choice in those front areas now.

One of the most impressive things about Edouard too is his ability to handle pressure situations. That pre-match apprehension from the crowd was only heightened when Rosenborg took the lead, and all of their fears looked to be well-founded.

In the end though, the defence was solid enough, and Edouard really stepped up to the plate on his own up front and looked every inch the class act Brendan Rodgers has long said he was.

Any pre-match jitters were soon dispelled, and while that came from the whole side, it was Edouard who really stepped up to the plate when it mattered most.

After the change of shape, Celtic played exceptionally well and could have won by more. That’s why I can’t see there being any problems in the return leg. I can actually see Celtic winning the game over there.

It doesn’t happen often with Celtic, but there was an imbalance before the manager moved James Forrest back to the right.

Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown were playing square in midfield, but then he changed it to a more familiar shape with Brown sitting in front of the back four, and that allowed Ntcham and Callum McGregor to get forward and they looked far more threatening along with Forrest on the right. He has been oversahdowed by Edouard, but Ntcham was particularly impressive.

Rosenborg were a step up from Alashkert, but again, Celtic just proved too good for the opposition, and I can see them marching on to Athens.
