A MAJOR retailer whose Sauchiehall Street premises has been out of operation due to the Victoria's Nightclub cordon has made moves to take over another unit on the shopping stretch.

Specsavers opticians have asked Glasgow City Council for permission to display their sign on the former Ann Summers premises.

The business was previously based further along the street inside the Victoria's Nightclub cordon and the Sauchiehall Street unit has been closed since March when the fire happened.

Staff who worked at the unit in Sauchiehall Street have been operating out of a store within the city's Buchanan Galleries.

Previously Glasgow City Council confirmed that the buildings hit by a fire on Sauchiehall Street will be demolished.

The council said the buildings are unsafe and will have to be pulled down by their owners.

At the height of the blaze, more than 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines were mobilised to the city centre to fight the fire.

It is hoped the cordon area will reopen next month.

A Specsavers spokeswoman said: "While seeking planning permission for a new unit on Sauchiehall Street, the Specsavers store has currently relocated to a new standalone unit within Buchanan Galleries."

Glasgow City Council have until September 10 to approve Specsavers plans.
