GARNETHILL residents who were forced from their homes following the Glasgow School of Art fire are to benefit from a music auction.

Hellfire Music Club on Argyle Street will host an online and in-store auction on Saturday, August 4, to raise funds for the dozens of householders who have been fighting for access to their homes since the June 15 blaze.

So far the not-for-profit organisation has received an array of items from an old sewing machine to alcohol and even a signed Sandi Thom guitar. Following the event this weekend, the proceeds will be split between the music venue and Garnethill Displaced Residents Group who will be able to distribute the funds to those in need.

A spokesman for the club said staff and volunteers were keen to do all they could to help following the devastating fire.

He told the Evening Times: “For the last three weeks we’ve been trying to get as much stuff in as possible.

“We seen those people getting kicked out of their homes and in anyway we could help we were going to do so.

“We know a lot of people who have lost their jobs or been put out their homes so it’s important.”

The club often splits proceeds from its events with those in need and when the fire broke out around the time the decision to embark on an auction was made it was a “no brainer” for staff.

The spokesman added: “I was at the residents meeting to see what we can do to help out – anything Glasgow-related we try to get involved.

“We like to get in there and see if there’s anything we can do. It’s really a community effort.”

The auction kicks of from 3pm with live music from two European singers to provide entertainment, while eatery the Lean Factory will provide refreshments.

Not all of the items – such as alcohol and the I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker singer’s guitar – will be available online. The auction will run until around 9pm.
